Description
The saw palmetto plant doesn't look like much: It's a short palm native to the southeastern United States, with spiked, fan-shaped leaves and small fruit about the size and color of dark olives. But the saw palmetto's fruit - more specifically, extracts of the berry - is valued as medicine. In Germany, it's a popular over-the-counter remedy.
The herb is generally much cheaper than prescription drugs; figures published by James A. Duke, Ph.D., in his 1999 book Dr. Duke's Essential Herbs, estimated that a year's supply of saw palmetto supplements cost $180, compared to $600 for Proscar and $480 for Hytrin, another prescription drug.
Potential Health Benefits
Saw palmetto is used to relieve symptoms of benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), the noncancerous enlargement of the prostate gland. Saw palmetto doesn't shrink the gland, but it does ease annoying symptoms of BPH: frequent urination, weak urination, and sleep-destroying nighttime urination. Many men who use it report fewer side effects with saw palmetto than with synthetic drugs used to treat BPH.
Scientific Evidence
According to Commission E, "The drug contains fatty oils with phytosterols and polysaccharides." In tests, the extract of ripe, dried fruit appeared to relieve BPH symptoms by means of its antiandrogen and anti-inflammatory properties.
A 1996 study of more than 1,000 men found saw palmetto as effective as the drug Proscar and lacking major side effects such as impotence and weak libido, according to the journal Prostate. European studies show that saw palmetto is especially effective in the early stages of BPH.
A German study found that only 2 percent of male subjects dropped out of the trial because of side effects from saw palmetto, while some 80 percent reported an easing of their symptoms.
How to Use the Herb
Commission E used daily doses of 1-2 grams of the dried berry and 320 milligrams of berry extract; the latter is the standard dose in European clinical trials.
