Description
The bark of the sassafras root and the root itself are used in herbal medicine. The lungs and kidneys are most affected by this herb which is known to exhibit alterative, diaphoretic, diuretic, carminative, and antirheumatic actions on the body. Sassafras root is typically used for arthritis and rheumatism, acne and various skin eruptions, as well as colds and flus. The biochemical constituents of this herb include an essential oil, safrole, resin and tannin, and some alkaloids.
Sassafras is very effective as a blood-purifying alterative for a wide variety of skin diseases including acne. It is also commonly used by the rural folk of Appalachia and the Ozarks as diuretic and treatment for arthritic and rheumatic complaints, pains, ulcers, colds and flus.
Concern for the carcinogenic properties of safrole, which is present in small concentrations in sassafras root bark, has brought up another problem as to the possible safety of sassafras as an herb and recreational beverage in root beers and teas. It must be remembered that while a particular plant constituent may be toxic when isolated and concentrated, as part of the dynamic combination of complex elements in the whole herb it is quite safe. In the case of safrole, it is charactenstically found in many common foods and spices including sweet basil, nutmeg and black pepper.
The small concentration of safrole in sassafras, together with its traditional widespread use in rural areas of Southeast North Amenca an area notably low in cancer as compared to other areas of the US, leaves some question as to the equating of the carcinogenic properties of pure safople with the use of the whole herb. There seems to be some research which supports this opinion.
It has been found that whole sassafras when fed to rats and mice does result in the formation of live tumors. However, when the safrole, which accounts for part of the characteristic aroma and flavor of sassafras is removed, the rats still develop liver tumors. It would seem that something in sassafras simply does not agree with the metabolism of rats.
In 1977, however, Swiss toxicologists performed a study giving sassafras by mouth to human volunteers regularly over an appropriate period of time. They found that safrole was not metabolized into l-hydroxysafrole, which is the metabolist responsible for safrole's carcinogenicity.
Furthermore, sassafras is seldom used alone, so that its combination with other herbs tends to lessen the standard dose and offset any possible side effects. This same formula can be used for arthritic and rheumatic complaints.
Dosage: Standard infusion, 3-9 grams of the whole herb, or 10-30 drops of the tincture.
