The root of the wild yam affects the systems of the body that include the liver, gallbladder, kidneys, spleen, and pancreas. Wild yam exhibits antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, cholagogic, diaphoretic, and expectorant actions. Biochemical analysis has confirmed the presence of steroidal saponins, mainly diosgenin; these are hormone precursors, especially of progesterone and other cortical steroids.
Wild yam is used for biliary colic, pains of gallstones, menstrual cramps, arthritic and rheumatic pains, abdominal and intestinal cramps. It is also good for chronic problems associated with gas or flatulence.
For chronic liver problems and chronic gas, combine two parts wild yam root, one part Oregon grape or barberry root and one-half part each of fennel seeds and ginger. Take as a tea or powder after meals.
For gallstones, combine equal parts wild yam root, fringe tree bark, Oregon grape or barberry root, turmeric root and marshmallow root. Take as a tea, simmering one ounce of the combination in a pint of boiling water. It can also be taken as a powder, taking two to four capsules every hour or two, tapering off as symptoms subside. If after twelve hours symptoms have not subsided, consider seeking professional help.

[Editor: Caffeine, alcohol, sugar, smoking, stress, and other dietary factors can all adversely affect the balance of the hormonal and metabolic systems in the body. Many people take wild yam products to curb PMS symptoms or balance hormones by regulating the anti-stress adrenal glands. However, this runs counter to the effects of caffeine which stimulates the release of excess stress hormones including cortisol and adrenaline. While we haven't come across any serious health risks associated with taking caffeine with wild yam, it seems obviously counterproductive to do so, if the goal is to keep one's hormone and stress levels at a healthy equilibrium.]

It has been great. I've used wild yam root for years as a substitute for hormones.. never used the first hormone and I'm delighted with the product. This was my first experience with this particular brand and I am very satisfied. I have a great chiropractor who muscle tests every vitamin I take and his comment was that this product is excellent.
