Description: White dead nettle is a perennial herb (up to 0.5 m), with branched rhizomes and erect branches bearing heart-shaped, toothed leaves in opposite pairs. The white, tubular and two-lipped flowers form small clusters in the axils of the upper leaves. When not in flower, it resembles nettle (Urtica dioica), hence the common name.
Origin: Europe and Asia; naturalised in parts of North America. Commercial harvesting is done in eastern Europe.
Parts Used: Dried flowering tops (white dead nettle herb - Lamii albi herba) or the dried petals (white dead nettle flower - Lamii albi flos; synon. Flores Lamii albi).
Therapeutic Category: Traditional expectorant.
Uses and Properties: The herb is used to treat respiratory complaints (to remove phlegm and catarrh) and stomach disorders (flatulence, gastritis, dyspepia). It has been used specifically in case of leucorrhoea (fluor albus), but also against menopausal and urogenital problems. It is considered to be a diuretic and "blood cleanser". Poultices are applied to swellings, bruises, varicose veins and other skin inflammations. The herb is said to be effective against dandruff and an itching scalp and is included in tea mixtures and sedative teas. Extracts are used in lotions, shampoos, rinses and baths.
Active Ingredients: The main active ingredients are considered to be iridoid glycosides (lamalbide is a major compound, together with 6-desoxylamalbide, caryoptin and albos ides A and B). It is also said to contain mucilage, triterpene saponins, tannins (5-14%), phenolic acids (chlorogenic acid, lamalboside, acteoside) and flavonoids (rutin, quercetin, kaempferol). However, some of these compounds have not been thoroughly studied in L. album.
Pharmacological Effects: Experiments have shown anti-inflammatory, weak diuretic and antimicrobial activity which could be attributed to the iridoids, tannins and triterpene saponins.
Status: Traditional medicine; Pharm.; Comm. E+ (flowers only).

A popular herb for men's health, Nettle nourishes the kidneys and the urinary tract. It contains high amounts of iodine, which makes it beneficial for the thyroid gland - your body's 'internal thermostat'. Nettle is also rich in vitamins A and C, iron, calcium, magnesium, potassium, and chlorophyll. Nettle’s root affects hormones and proteins that carry sex hormones (such as testosterone or estrogen) in the human body, which may explain why this herb helps with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and other disorders of the prostate gland.
Some other herbs that are suggested specifically to treat ailments of the prostate are: Saw Palmetto, Pumpkin Seed and Pygeum Bark. TerraVita manufactures a product that is designed to naturally protect the health of the prostate gland and it is called Prostate Support.
Directions
