Description
This peppery green plant, grown all over the world, gets its tingly quality from a key constituent: mustard oil. Long a favorite in salads and sandwiches, watercress also has medicinal qualities.
Potential Health Benefits
Commission E endorses watercress - specifically, the fresh or dried leaves and stems - to loosen phlegm and treat inflammation of the respiratory tract. Watercress compresses are used in Italy to treat arthritis, and homeopaths prescribe their customary minute doses to deal with a range of maladies that haven't been verified by the commission.
Scientific Evidence
Commission E puts the stamp of approval on watercress without citing scientific studies. The PDR Family Guide to Natural Medicines and Healing Therapies seconds Commission E, recommending watercress as a means of fighting cough and bronchitis. The PDR book credits watercress's medicinal powers to "mustard oil, a compound that flushes excess water from the body" and refers to unnamed researchers who "have also shown that the herb kills bacteria." It doesn't say which bacteria.
How to Use the Herb
Commission E recommends a daily dose of 4-6 grams of dried herb; 20-30 grams of fresh herb; or 60-150 grams of freshly pressed juice.
Watercress tea can be made by pouring boiling water over 1/2 teaspoonflul of crushed herb and steeping for 10 minutes.

Directions
Take 1 capsule, 3 times daily, with meals.
Cautions
Commission E advises consumers to keep watercress away from children under four and rules out its use for anyone with ulcers or inflammatory kidney disease. Owing to the herb's high concentration of mustard oil, it can irritate the stomach.
