Description
Commission E actually issues three evaluations of psyllium, an herbal laxative that's the main ingredient in Metamucil, Prolax, and other mainstream products.
We follow the commission's lead with a summary of black psyllium seed. Psyllium is an annual that produces brown, seed-bearing pods. The plant is also sometimes called plantain, but shouldn't be confused with the plantain herb covered elsewhere in this book, nor with the banana-like palm also known as plantain.
Potential Health Benefits
The dried, ripe black seeds from psyllium are used to clear up chronic constipation and irritable bowel syndrome. Like the blonde seeds, black seed has recently been shown to have valuable cholesterol-lowering properties.
Scientific Evidence
The mucilage in psyllium seeds combines with water in the intestines. The water-logged bulk speeds stools on their way, helping to end constipation. Psyllium can help control diarrhea, too, since the added water and mucilage add bulk to stools. Psyllium's cholesterol-fighting qualities have been demonstrated in controlled studies.
In a 1988 study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, 3 teaspoonfuls of psyllium daily for 8 weeks lowered the blood cholesterol levels of human test subjects.
A 1989 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed that psyillium reduced cholesterol in people taking it for 12 weeks by an average of 5 percent, lowering the risk of heart attack.

The essence of the current American rule on Traditional Uses is, as stated by FTC, "Claims based on historical or traditional use should be substantiated by confirming scientific evidence, or should be presented in such a way that consumers understand that the sole basis for the claim is a history of use of the product for a particular purpose."
