Description
Olive trees have been cultivated in Europe since well before 2500 BC and amphoras (a ceramic vase with two handles and a long neck which is narrower than the body) of olive oil have been found at such historic sites as the citadel at Mycenae, palace of Homer's Agamemnon. In ancient Egypt, the oil was burned in lamps, used in cooking and formed the basis of scented oils. There is little evidence, however that it was used medicinally. The Greeks also associated it with the goddess Athena, who was a symbol of wisdom.
Olive oil is still prized for cooking and today we know that it contains oleic acid (a mono-unsaturated fatty acid) and some cis-linoleic acid (LA) and is thus a good source of essential fatty acids and rather healthier than the saturated fats of butter and animal products. The oil can be taken in teaspoon doses for constipation or for treating pinworms in children. Olive oil also helps to reduce gastric secretions by coating the stomach lining and thus can be ideal for peptic ulcers. In addition, a daily dessert-spoonful of oil is believed to help protect against atherosclerosis (a disease affecting arterial blood vessels).
In recent years, Olive has also figured in anti-candida diets and has been recommended by many to combat cancer and aging, thanks to its anti-oxidant properties.
Traditionally, olive oil has been massaged into the scalp to counter dandruff and improve hair quality or used as a rub for rheumatism. Olive oil is a common ingredient in folk liniments for muscle strains and sprains. There are even reports that swallowing a couple of olive stones can relieve back pain within hours.
Olive leaves are also used medicinally and are known to reduce blood sugar levels. French research from the 1930s demonstrated that Olive leaves lower blood pressure. They are antispasmodic, diuretic and will stimulate bile flow. Olive leaf tea can be helpful for reducing moderately high blood pressure and is used in Mediterranean countries for urinary tract infections. The leaves are quite tough so need to be infused for at least 20 minutes.

The essence of the current American rule on Traditional Uses is, as stated by FTC, "Claims based on historical or traditional use should be substantiated by confirming scientific evidence, or should be presented in such a way that consumers understand that the sole basis for the claim is a history of use of the product for a particular purpose."
