Description
Name
Verbascum thapsus, Schrad (Scrophulariaceae), commonly called mullein, hare's beard, cow's lungwort, donkey's ears, flannel dock, and Beggar's blanket. In French, it is Moléne, Bouillon-blanc, or Bonhomme; in German, Gross Koigskerze.
Source
A perennial with yellow flowers that grows throughout Europe and Asia Minor. Remedies are made from the flowers. A closely related plant, commonly known as orange mullein is also used by herbalists.
History
The name comes from the latin mollis meaning soft, because the large leaves have a velvety texture. In medieval times the stems were dried, dipped in tallow, and used to make torches. Juice from the plant was used to treat hemorrhoids and to cure gout. Today's users make a tea from the flowers, but in the past, flowers were picked and left to rot for several months before their juice was pressed out and bottled.
Traditional Claims
Flowers were used as a demulcent, expectorant, diuretic, sedative. Roots were used to treat cramps and diarrhea.
Commission E Recommendations
Expectorant.
Proven Effects
In laboratory experiments, extracts of mullein, lemon balm, and artichoke, which all contain caffeic acid and its derivatives, exhibit the same hepatoprotective effects. Mullein is one of the plants used in folk medicine to treat tumors. Tumor growth involves the production of abnormal proteins. Extracts from the same three plants inhibit protein biosynthesis. They do so by inhibiting the actions of a substance that builds proteins (elongation factor eEF-2). Extracts from other plants, particularly aloe, seem to have the same effect. Other extracts of mullein's flowers have antiviral activity (in particular against influenza A and B as well as herpes simplex viruses). Mullein also contains a kind of saponin (saikosaponins) that is known to be a potent anti-inflammatory agent. Saponins are well known respiratory irritants, which probably accounts for the popularity of mullein as in expectorant, at least in Europe.
Dosage
Commission E recommends a dose of 3-4 grams of dried herb per day, either brewed in a tea or in capsule form.
