The herb contains saponins and astringent tannins. It includes mucilage, a substance that coats the inside of the throat when it absorbs water and soothes irritated tissue. Extracts from mullein flowers have shown intriguing powers in clinical studies. In a 1991 European study, mullein extract was judged to have antiviral action against influenzas A and B as well as the herpes simplex virus - pointing to possible future uses of this herb.
How to Use the Herb
Mullein flowers, dried and ground, are taken at daily dosages of 3-4 grams. A tea can be made, as well, by pouring boiling water over 1.5-2.0 grams and steeping for 10 minutes.
