Meadowsweet Filipendula ulmaria (L.) Maxim. (= Spiraea ulmaria L.)
Family: Rosaceae.
Other Names: Queen-of-the-meadow; reine des prés (French); Echtes Mädesüß (German); regina dei prati, olmaria (Italian).
Description: A perennial herb of wet places, with erect angular and grooved stems, alternate compound leaves bearing three to nine pairs of dentate leaves. The flowers are yellowish white and are borne in multi-flowered corymbs on the stem tips. The famous aspirin (Aspirin) was named after Spiraea ulmaria (the old name for F. ulmaria).
Origin: Europe and Asia (naturalised in North America); wild-harvested during the flowering season.
Parts Used: Dried flowers (Spiraeae flos) or dried aboveground parts (Spiraeae herba).
Uses and Properties: Used in supportive treatment of colds accompanied by fever. It is a traditional diuretic and commonly used in folk medicine against arthritis and rheumatism. Other uses relate to antiseptic, astringent, anti-inflammatory and anti-ulcer properties.
Active Ingredients: The drug is rich in flavonoids (up to 6% in flowers), with spiraeoside (= kaempferol 4-glucoside), rutin, hyperoside and other flavonol glycosides. Gallo- and ellagitannins are present in concentrations of up to 20% (esters of gallic acid, di- and trigalloyl moieties with glucose; such as rugosin D). The volatile oil is rich in methylsalicylate and salicylaldehyde; both are present as corresponding glycosides (about 0.5%) in the intact plant (spiraein and monotropitin, respectively).
Pharmacological Effects: Tannins can form non-covalent bonds with various proteins (enzymes, receptors, transporters) and are therefore astringent, antimicrobial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. These effects are probably enhanced by the flavonoids. Salicylates inhibit cyclooxygenase and thus the formation of prostaglandins, involved in inflammations. In analaogy to salicin, it appears likely that the spiraein and monotropin are hydrolysed in the intestine and liver thus converting the "prodrug" into an active medicine. The analgesic, anti-inflammatory and anti-rheumatic properties of meadowsweet thus appear plausible.
Status: Traditional medicine; Pharm.; Comm.E+.
Preparation and Dosage: A tea is made of 4 - 6 g of the dried herb, and taken three times per day. Other sources recommend a daily dose of 2.5 - 3.5 g of the flowers and 4 - 5 g of the herb. The powdered herb or extracts are used in herbal teas, tablets and tinctures.
