Description
Medicinal Usage
Horsetail has long been used in folk medicine, externally to heal wounds, cuts, and sores, and internally to promote urination and to reduce bleeding in the genitourinary tract.
Besides being used as an abrasive, horsetail has been an important remedy in folk medicine. A poultice of crushed sterile stems has been applied to wounds to stop bleeding. A liquid extract made by boiling the stems has been used as a mouthwash for oral infections, and there is evidence that horsetail has some antibiotic properties. This decoction is also said to increase urination (for which there is some evidence) and to reduce some kinds of internal bleeding.
General Herb Information
Horsetails represent a venerable family of plants some 400 million years old. Before flowering plants evolved, forests of giant horsetails waved over Paleozoic landscapes. The tallest (Equisetum giganteum) of some 30 existing species of horsetail grows to a height of 32 feet in South America. A nonflowering plant, horsetail reproduces by means of micro scopic spores. These are produced in spore cases underneath small scales atop a slender, pale brown shoot. When dry, the spores are released, to be spread by the wind.
After the spores have been released, the horsetail spike withers. From the same root-like rhizomes there then appears the multi-branched bushy stem from which the plant gets its name. Because the plant contains a large amount of abrasive silica, it once served as a scouring pad for kitchen utensils; resourceful campers still gather it for cleaning up after campfire meals.
Habitat: Swamps and damp woods, fields, roadsides, embankments, and waste places.
Range: Temperate regions of North America. An endangered species in Texas.
Identification: The fertile shoot (March-May) is a single, jointed, brownish-pink stem about 8 inches tall with a spore-bearing conelike structure on top. It soon disappears and is followed by a green, bushy, jointed sterile stem with whorls of thin branches 1-2 1/2 feet long.
