Other Names: Green tea; théier (French); Teestrauch (German); tè (Italian); té (Spanish).
Description: A large shrub (clipped to 1.5 m to facilitate harvesting) with glossy leaves and attractive white flowers. The ornamental plant C. japonica is a close relative.
Origin: Indigenous to southern and eastern Asia; grown in China since ancient times; commercial cultivation spread to India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Indonesia and Africa.
Parts Used: Young leaves (Theaefolium), usually with the unopened apical bud (pekoe).Three main tea types can be distinguished: black tea (rolled, fermented; dried),green tea (heat-treated and rapidly-dried; rolled) and oolong tea (semi-fermented). Fermentation (i.e. enzymatic oxidation) changes the colour from yellowish green (green tea) to reddish brown (black tea) and also the chemical composition (formation of flavour constituents and oxidation of the polyphenols).
Therapeutic Category: Stimulant, antioxidant, possible antimutagen.
Uses and Properties: Tea is mainly a beverage but is medicinally used to treat mild acute diarrhoea and functional asthenia. Today, tea leaf products are applied externally as supportive treatment in weight loss programmes and for symptomatic relief of skin disorders. Green tea is taken as antioxidant and diuretic, and is thought to be antimutagertic and anticarcinogenic.
Active Ingredients: Tea contains 2-4% caffeine; theobromine and theophylline are below 0.05%. Up to 30% phenolics are composed of a complex mixture of phenolic acids, gallotannins, flavonol glycosides and especially numerous flavan-type phenolics (including epigallocatechin gallate, epicatechin gallate and proanthocyanidins). Also present are triterpene saponins, carotenoids and non-protein amino acids (theanine, 2-amino-6-ethylamidoadipinic acid).
Pharmacological Effects: Tannins interact with proteins and are astringent; they are responsible for the anti-diarrhoeal activity of tea. Antioxidant, antimutagenic and diuretic effects are also ascribed to the tannins and other phenolic compounds. It is claimed that tea inhibits the absorption of cholesterol. The stimulating effect is due to caffeine - it affects adenosine receptors and blocks phosphodiesterase.
Status: Traditional medicine; Pharm.
Preparation and Dosage: Infusions are taken as tea, or extracts are included in commercial preparations and mixtures.

The essence of the current American rule on Traditional Uses is, as stated by FTC, "Claims based on historical or traditional use should be substantiated by confirming scientific evidence, or should be presented in such a way that consumers understand that the sole basis for the claim is a history of use of the product for a particular purpose."
