Description
Glucomannan is high in fiber, essential for cleaning the digestive system. Glucomannan is taken from the Konnyaku root and is from the same family as the yam, which is 100 percent natural dietary fiber without calories. Since lack of fiber is a major cause for the high incidence of growing gastrointestinal disorders, it is a valuable herb.
Glucomannan helps reduce cholesterol and triglyceride levels, helps maintain regularity and promotes bowel health. It helps to normalize blood sugar, reduce fat absorption, promotes weight loss, relieves stress on the pancreas and discourages blood sugar abnormalities, such as hypoglycemia. Glucomannan absorbs toxic substances produced during digestion and elimination. It binds toxic material and eliminates them before they can be absorbed into the blood stream. Glucomannan acts as a prevention of chronic disease and a weight control agent. As a diet aid, it expands to about 50 times its original volume when used with a large glass of water. It has also been shown to have efficacy for atheroslerosis, hemorrhoids, constipation, high blood pressure, diabetes, hypoglycemia, digestive problems, obesity, diverticular disease, and the pancreas to reduce stress.

Glucomannan, flaxseed, and psyllium are all excellent sources of dietary fiber. Glucomannan consists of soluble fiber derived from the konjac plant, while psyllium husk and flaxseed are rich in both soluble and insoluble fibers. A diet consisting of both kinds of fibers is preferable; soluble fiber acts like a fat-binding gel and insoluble fiber will bulk up and soften stools.
They all have the ability to lower cholesterol due to the presence of soluble fiber, and there are human clinical trials that support the effectiveness of each. The potential benefits of psyllium husk and flaxseed would be additional insoluble fiber, and the presence of essential fatty acids in flaxseed is an added benefit that sets it apart from the others.
The mechanism by which these soluble fibers lower cholesterol is not fully understood. They may minimize the absorption of cholesterol in the intestines; it may be that cholesterol undergoes a conversion and is removed due to the viscous, soluble fiber; or the fiber's ability to bind to to bile salts may be the dominant factor - or all three.

Kidney disease occurs when the kidneys permanently lose the ability to remove waste and maintain fluid and chemical balances in the body. Kidney disease can develop rapidly (over two to three months) or very slowly (over 30 to 40 years). A person who suffers from chronic kidney disease has kidneys that do not function as well as they should. People can live with kidneys that do not perform at 100% capacity or with only one working kidney.
The cause of kidney disease is not always known, but experts believe many conditions can lead to chronic kidney disease, including diabetes, high blood pressure, glomerulonephritis, medication use, kidney infection and some genetic disorders.
There is no reason to believe that glucomannan will affect the function of kidneys. However, as the safety of Glucomannan in those with kidney disease is uncertain, I would suggest that you speak with your physician prior to beginning this course of treatment. He or she will have the most knowledge regarding your personal medical history and will be able to make the most informed decision regarding your optimal health!
Directions
Stir 1/4 of a teaspoon into a glass of water and consume 3 times daily, with meals.
Cautions
Like other soluble fibers, glucomannan has the potential to bind with and reduce the absorption of certain nutrients - so a daily multivitamin supplement may be advisable for individuals consuming high doses of glucomannan on a regular basis.
In high doses, glucomannan may lead to diarrhea, bloating and flatulence - but cutting back the dose relieves these unpleasant side effects.
