Other Names: Ginkgo (French); Ginkgo (German); ginkgo biloba (Italian); arbol de los escudos (Spanish).
Description: A large tree (up to 35 m in height), with male and female cones borne on separate trees. The leaves are fan-shaped, often notched at the tip (bibbed) and with an unusual system of parallel veins. The female cones have a fleshy outer layer with an unpleasant smell of rancid butter, but the inner part is edible and much sought after in China ("white nuts").
Origin: China. A popular ornamental tree and cultivated on a commercial scale in China, France and the USA. As a "living fossil" it has maintained its morphology for nearly 200 million years.
Parts Used: Leaves (also seeds).
Therapeutic Category: Central and peripheral circulatory disturbances.
Uses and Properties: Special leaf extracts are used to treat the symptoms of various forms of cerebrovascular insufficiency and dementia (including memory loss, disturbed concentration, dizziness, sleep disturbances, mood swings, decreased stamina and debilitation, morbus Alzheimer). It is also specifically used to treat patients with peripheral arterial occlusive disease (improvement of the pain-free walking distance). Leaves have been part of Chinese medicine for at least 2,800 years and are still used to strengthen the heart and lungs, and to treat chilblains. The seeds are employed as antitussive and expectorant medicine in China and Japan.
Active Ingredients: Flavonoids (mainly flavonol glycosides and non-glycosidic bioflavonoids), unique diterpene lactones (known as ginkgolides A, B, C, J, and M) and a sesquiterpenoid (bilobalide). Extracts contain only negligible amounts of ginkgolic acids.
Pharmacological Effetcs: Special extracts show a wide range of biological activities, including the inhibition of the platelet activating factor (PAF) and of acetylcholine esterase. Clinical trials have shown the efficacy of ginkgo extracts to treat patients with dementia, tinnitus and peripheral circulatory disorders.
Status: Traditional medicine; Comm. E+ (extracts only); clinical trials+.
Preparation and Dosage: Special acetone-water extracts (such as EGb 761) are produced to eliminate both inactive and potentially harmful substances and are widely used in phytotherapy. The recommended daily dose is in the range of 120 - 240 mg of extract, and the duration of treatment is usually no less than 6 - 8 weeks. Ginkgo biloba extract is, taken in standard dosages, very safe, and seems to produce mild improvements in patients with Alzheimer's disease. Whether it is of any value in treating other circulatory disorders, such as erectile dysfunction, is hard to say, but since it is so safe, trying the extract might be worth while. Ginkgo biloba should never be used by anyone taking coumadin or other blood thinning products. Heart patients, who take aspirin regularly, should first consult their doctors. Always read the label and only purchase products made from ginkgo leaves. The seeds are toxic and dangerous.
