ELECAMPE or SCABWORT (Inula helenium) is a large herb of European and North Asian origin. Its root was used in ancient Rome as a vegetable. In medieval times sweetmeat was made by adding to the ground roots, eggs, salt, sugar, saffron and spices. This herb was also considered an excellent remedy for pulmonary diseases.
Several species are used medicinally; they are bitter and aromatic. Inula campana is very much used in pharmacy. The leaves of the variety known as Rock Samphire can be eaten pickled in vinegar and are aperitive. The wild variety, Scabwort, is used as an astringent in vases of dysenteric affection.
