Description
Bitter, acrid elder flower is stimulative, diaphoretic and alterative. The aged bark has a laxative effect while the berries are thought to be anti-rheumatic. Internally, elder flower is typically recommended for colds, flus, and fevers; externally, it is used for clearing the skin. The systems of the body directly affected by elder flower include the lungs and the liver.
Elder flowers are commonly used in the first stages of colds and flus. Combine equal parts elder flowers, peppermint and yarrow with a quarter part licorice. Covered, steep approximately one ounce or more of this mixture, with three or four slices of fresh ginger if available, in a pint of boiling water. Drink one or two cups as hot as possible before taking a hot bath and retiring to bed with plenty of warm covers to induce perspiration.
Elder flowers are also used in salves for the treatment of bums, rashes, minor- skin ailments and to diminish wrinkles. The leaves are a good detoxifying agent in salves. The bark can be quite strong and toxic as a laxative unless properly aged for a year or more. Finally, the berries are a good general blood purifier and have been used as an effective treatment for arthritic and rheumatic complaints.
