Description
Medicinal Usage
Valerian is one of the best of herbal tranquilizers. The tea and tincture are good antispasmodics, anodynes, carminatives, hypnotics, and nervines. Valerian also possesses worm-expelling qualities. It will help relieve stress, muscle spasms, mental depression and despondency, migraine, insomnia, stomach cramps, fatigue, and nervous conditions in general. The root is a central nervous system depressant, stimulating in fatigue and calming in agitation.
Valerian contains the valepotriates - valtrate and didrovaltrate, tannins, choline, alkaloids, and an essential oil composed mainly of bornyl acetate and isovalerate.
General Herb Information
Valerian is a hardy perennial growing to five feet in height native to Eurasia and naturalized in some parts of North America.
The stems are fairly succulent, hollow, and grooved. The deeply divided leaves are larger at the base, becoming progressively smaller on the flower stalks. Seven to ten pairs of oblong or lance-shaped leaf segments characterize the fern-like leaves. The leaves are entire or toothed. The fragrant, tiny, white, pink or lavender flowers are borne in flat umbel-like clusters. Blooms shoot up in late May lasting through August.
Propagate by seeds or spring and fall root divisions. Seeds have a short viability and should be sown when ripe. Plants will self-sow and spread by root runners. They can become weedy. Seeds germinate in about twenty days. Give plants one-foot spacings.
Full sun or partial shade are suitable for valerian. It will grow on a wide range of soils but does best in a moist, rich loam. A soil pH of 6 to 7 is best. Commercial plantings have produced yields of 2,000 pounds per acre.
Harvest the roots in the fall of the second year's growth. Roots three-fourths inch and thicker should be split before drying. Care must be taken to wash off all dirt adhering to roots. Valerian's characteristic odor develops upon drying.
Dosage
Valerian is sold in teas, tinctures, tablets and capsule forms, and the dosage varies depending on the manufacturer. Recommended doses range from 200 to 1,000 mg of V. officinalis root, 30 to 60 minutes before retiring.

Directions
Take 1 capsule, 3 times daily, with meals.
Cautions
Valerian should not be used for more than 2 to 3 weeks at a time, as it may then be harmful or become addictive. Large doses or extended use may produce symptoms of poisoning. In extremely high doses, it may cause paralysis and a weakening of the heart. Take the tea twice daily, for no more than 2-3 weeks at a time without a break, as continual use or high doses may lead to headaches and palpitations. Do not exceed the recommended dose. Use under medical supervision.
Valerian enhances the action of sleep-inducing drugs, so avoid if taking this type of medication. Do not confuse with the garden plant, red "American" valerian (Centranthus ruber) which has no medicinal properties.
