Description
The bitter and acrid-tasting dong quai root acts as a uterine tonic, and antispasmodic, and an alterative to benefit disorders related to the systems of the body that include the uterus, the blood, and the muscles.
Dong quai is used for the treatment of almost every female gynecological ailment. It is particularly useful for the treatment of menstrual cramps, irregularity, delayed flow and weakness during the menstrual period. It is also used to relieve the symptoms of menopause.
Dong quai is a useful antispasmodic for treating insomnia, hypertension and cramps. It is nourishing to the blood and useful in treating anemia. Dong quai is a valuable blood purifier. It is warming to the circulation and is used to moisten the intestines to treat constipation.
Dong quai, also known as tang kwei, should not be used during pregnancy, or with excessive menstrual flow.
The Western herb angelica, Angelica archangelica, can be substituted in some cases. However, its action is harsher and it is a stimulant that reduces cramping through its warming quality, while dong quai accomplishes this through its antispasmodic components. Both are useful blood purifiers.

Is Terravita's Don Quai safe? Is it grown in the US? I hear China may have heavy metals in their Don Quai? How do I know which is safe?

Any brand of Dong Quai can be safe if taken in moderation and according to a doctor's recommendations. As with any herb or medication, excessive use can cause side effects - in the case of Dong Quai, these may include skin sensitivity, rashes, fever, or menstrual bleeding. Avoid using Dong Quai if you are already taking blood thinning products, Coumadin (warfarin), aspirin or if you have an estrogen-sensitive condition.
Dong Quai is typically grown in Asia or Europe.

At the time of writing, the RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) value for Dong Quai has not been established by the US government. However, the suggested dosage for Dong Quai is to take one 450 mg capsule, three times daily, with meals. As with any herbal preparation, it will take a few weeks before the herb can work its way through your system and begin to create its positive effects. Dong quai may cause some fair-skinned people to become more sensitive to sunlight. People using it on a regular basis should limit prolonged exposure to the sun or other sources of ultraviolet radiation. Dong quai is not recommended for pregnant or breast-feeding women.
Dong Quai is an herb used for centuries as a natural way to support woman's health and to ease monthly discomforts. Women who are going off birth control pills can use Dong Quai to help re-establish regular menstrual cycles. Dong Quai has been called "the female ginseng" because of its energy-boosting properties.
Directions
Take 1 capsule, 3 times daily, with meals.
Cautions
Avoid if you are pregnant or have high blood pressure.
If you experience hypersensitivity to sunlight, discontinue use.

This is the best thing about how effective good Dong Quai is: I never have to buy it. My husband has learned that if we don't have this in the apartment, and my period starts, his life will be miserable. So my husband makes sure we never run out. Except for the first 4 months of our marriage, when he still hadn't figured this out, I've never had a rough menstruation since.

D-o-n-g Q-u-a-i spells relief
My sister and I have been using Dong Quai supplements for years to reduce the pains we suffer from PMS and cramps. Ugh. The few times either of us have run out and have had to persevere PMS without it, we've hardly survived and been able to live to tell about it. Dong Quai is a staple item in my medicine cabinet. I'm totally miserable without it.
