Description
Cramp bark, or guelder rose, or snowball tree, exhibits antispasmodic, sedative, nervine, and astringent actions on the body. It is commonly used for menstrual cramps, PMS, threatened miscarriage, and asthma. The biochemical constituents include hydroquinones, arbutin, coumarins, tannins, and catechins, while the bodily systems affected are the liver, lungs, heart, and the small intestine.
Cramp bark is useful for the cramps and discomfort of menstruation as well as other uterine problems. Its near relative black haw (Viburnum pntnifolium) is even more prized. Either or both are combined with false unicorn root (Chatnaelirium luteum) for the general treatment of all female reproductive disorders. Besides its general tonic effect upon the uterus and the regulation of the menstrual cycle, it is also effective for threatened miscarriage.
Another good acute formula for the treatment of menstrual cramps, PMS and convulsions is equal parts cramp bark or black haw with ginger and angelica root and three parts chamomile flowers.
Because of its general nervine and sedative properties, it is a good acute treatment for heart palpitations and rheumatism. Cramp bark can also be used as an antispasmodic in the treatment of asthma.
