Description
Medicinal Usage
In folk medicine, couch grass tea, brewed from the rhizomes, was used as a diuretic and recommended for a variety of urinary complaints, such as cystitis. Because the rhizomes have a high concentration of mucilage, they were believed to be soothing to the mucous membranes. The name dog grass refers to the plant's popularity with dogs, who seek it out whenthey are sick and eat its foliage as an emetic.
Couch grass is known in pharmacology as triticum (the Latin name for wheat) because it contains the carbohydrate triticin. The plant has been useful as cattle fodder, a coffee substitute, and an emergency ration. Although couch grass tea may be recommended by herbalists for its soothing effects on the urinary tract, this use is questioned by scientists; moreover, the safety of drinking the tea has not been proved.
General Herb Information
American gardeners and farmers bitterly regret that couch grass was ever introduced from Europe, for it is one of the most troublesome of weed grasses. Once established in a plot or field, it is practically impossible to eradicate. If even a single piece of its far-ranging rhizomes is left behind when the plant is rooted up, it will rapidly sprout anew. The plant's botanical name, Agrapyron repens, means "creeping field-wheat." The tenacious grip that couch grass rhizomes have on the soil can at times be beneficial, however, since it also helps to prevent soil erosion.
Couch grass's thick networks of rhizomes have, in fact, proved to be its most valuable feature. Rich in carbohydrates, the rhizomes make a nourishing fodder for cattle. On occasion, they have also served for human consumption - either roasted as a coffee substitute or, in times of famine, dried and ground as a replacement for flour.
Habitat: Open cultivated fields, waste places, pastures, seashores.
Range: Introduced from Europe, couch grass is common in the central and northern United States, and through British Columbia to Alaska.
Identification: A coarse perennial grass growing 1-3 feet tall. When in flower (late May-September), it looks like rye or beardless wheat, with tiny purplish stamens in the flower spikes atop each stem. The yellow-white rhizomes are slender and very long with thin brown rootlets at the nodes.
