Description
Also known as yumixu in Chinese, or stigmata maydis, cornflower has a somewhat sweet but bland flavor. The tassels, which are used medicinally, contain saponins, allantoin, and various sterols including B-sitosterol and stigmasterol. Vitamins, including C and K, are also present. The diuretic, lithotriptic (dissolves stones), demulcent, and cholagogue actions of corn silk make it useful for treating urinary infections.
Corn silk has long been regarded a traditional natural treatment for all urinary tract complaints including cystitis, urethritis, and prostatitis. It is also used to clear edema of the body generally.
