Chaste Tree Vitex agnus-cactus L.
Family: Verbenaceae.
Other Names: Gattilier agneau-chaste (French); Keuschlamm, Mönchspfeffer (German); agnocasto (Italian).
Description: A shrub or small tree of up to 5 m in height. Characteristic are the hairy, compound leaves, with up to nine oblong leaflets radiating from the leaf stalk, the oblong clusters of lilac to blue (rarely white) flowers and the small, hard, four-seeded berries.
Origin: Southern Europe and Asia (mainly Mediterranean region). It is grown as a garden ornamental and has become naturalised in tropical regions.
Parts Used: Ripe, dried fruits (chaste tree fruit - Agni casti fructus).
Therapeutic Category: Gynaecological.
Uses and Properties: Fruits or fruit extracts are used for a variety of menstrual disorders, including premenstrual syndrome, dysmenorrhoea, corpus luteum deficiency, as well as menopausal problems and mastodynia. Since ancient times, the chaste tree has been considered a symbol of chastity. The fruits are traditionally used as anaphrodisiacs and were called "monk's pepper" because they were considered to be helpful to medieval monks in keeping their vow of celibacy. The fruits are used in homoeopathy in preparations to treat impotence, depression and hypogalacria (inadequate milk secretion).
Preparation and Dosage: Treatment is given in the form of dry extracts or liquids (infusions or tinctures). The recommended dose varies from extracts corresponding to 30 - 40 mg of dry fruit, as recommended by the German Commission E, to up to 3 g of crushed fruits (or equivalent preparations) per day.
Active Ingredients: The fruits contain essential oil, iridoid glycosides (agnuside and aucubin), flavones and flavonoids (casticin, penduletin, chrysospenol-D), diterpenoids (vitexilactone, rotundifurane) and low yields (about 1.2%) of essential oil containing 1,8-cineole, limonene and pinene.
Pharmacological Effects: The beneficial effects are ascribed to diterpenes in the fruit which has a dopaminergic action in the pituitary gland, resulting in the inhibition of prolactin secretion. Animal and controlled clinical studies provide scientific support for activity of the drug in treating gynaecological disorders (including premenstrual syndrome, dysmenorrhoea, and corpus luteum deficiency).
