Description
Both the sweet fruit and the bitter leaves of the raspberry plant are used in natural medicine. Raspberry leaf has hemostatic, astringent, mildly alterative, and parturient pharmacological actions that benefit the spleen, liver, kidneys, and reproductive organs. Raspberry leaf has been traditionally used for pregnancy and delivery, menstrual irregularities, leucorrhea, and fevers. The biochemical makeup of the leaves includes flavonoids, glycosides of kaempferol and quercitin, and tannin; the fruits contain 1-2% organic acids of which 90% is citric acid, vitamin C, pectins and sugar.
For centuries, raspberry leaves have been taken by women throughout pregnancy to facilitate delivery and prevent miscarriage. Its uterine relaxant effects have been demonstrated on animals in numerous studies. They are also used for most other menstrual irregularities, especially to control frequent or excessive bleeding. It is used as well to reduce fevers and generally help stop bleeding.
The fruit is a nutritive tonic, especially good for strengthening the blood.
As good prenatal care to tone up and prepare the uterus for childbirth, combine equal parts raspberry leaves and squawvine. Steep a teaspoon in a cup of hot water and drink one cup two or three times daily. If there is a threatened miscarriage, add false unicorn root and cramp bark to the combination in equal parts.
