Fenugreek has been used, medicinally, since the times of the ancient Egyptians and Hippocrates. Fenugreek is used to soothe digestive problems, stimulate milk production in nursing mothers, ease bronchitis and sore throats, heal and reduce inflammations in wounds, lower blood sugar, and as an expectorant for coughs and colds. Fenugreek is also commonly used as a substitute for cod liver oil.
Fenugreek is also used for upper respiratory inflammation and, applied externally, for boils, ulcers, hives, and eczema. In Asian medicine, it is considered a treatment for anorexia, beriberi, bronchitis, fever, hernia, impotence, and vomiting; but its effectiveness for these conditions has not been clinically verified.
When used externally, Fenugreek has a soothing effect on the skin. Taken internally, it promotes healing, reduces blood sugar, and increases milk production. Researchers have been unable to pinpoint the active ingredient in the herb. However, it has recently aroused interest as a potential raw material for the production of steroids.
Fenugreek's medicinal benefits lie in the ripe, dried seeds. In use since the time of the ancient Greeks, it is still a common remedy in modern-day Egypt, where the seeds are soaked until they swell into a thick paste called "helba" that's used for fevers. Originally native to the Mediterranean region, the plant is now grown in southern France, Turkey, northern Africa, India, and China.

The essence of the current American rule on Traditional Uses is, as stated by FTC, "Claims based on historical or traditional use should be substantiated by confirming scientific evidence, or should be presented in such a way that consumers understand that the sole basis for the claim is a history of use of the product for a particular purpose."
