Description
Medicinal Usage
"The Greatest Medical Discovery Since the Dawn of History" - so claimed the makers of Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound, which was introduced to the American public in 1875 as a remedy for "female complaints." Fenugreek was one of its major ingredients. The compound also contained a comforting syrup that was about 18 percent alcohol.
Originating in the Mediterranean region and Asia, fenugreek is among the oldest of medicinal herbs. Its seeds were a favorite cure-all in ancient Egypt and India and later among the Greeks and Romans. Fenugreek tea was prescribed for tuberculosis, bronchitis, sore throat, and flagging sexual desire and as a general tonic. Poultices of fenugreek, prepared from pulverized seeds, were applied to relieve the pains of neuralgia, sciatica, swollen glands, wounds, skin irritations, and gout.
Modern wisdom is more specific about the herb's therapeutic effect. Fenugreek has value as a carminative, that is, as a substance that relieves intestinal gas. Its seeds also contain substances that soften the skin on application. Fenugreek is often used as one of the spices of curry, and its leaves are eaten in some parts of the world as a salad green.
Fenugreek seeds yield a soothing mucilage that goes into poultices and ointments. Taken internally as a tea, they are also effective for relieving gas pains. In the Middle East fenugreek is used to treat diabetes; some experimental data suggest that extracts of the seeds do lower blood sugar levels.

I read a book on Natural cures and herbs and it says that fenugreek is good for the eyes too. (Is this true?)
