Description
Clover Trifolium repens [White clover; Red Clover: Trifolium pratense (Culpeper: Trifolium; Trefoil or Honeysuckle)]
Medicinal Usage
Internally, clover was taken for skin complaints, especially eczema and psoriasis. Clover tea was said to stimulate liver and gall-bladder activity, improve appetite, and cure indigestion, bronchitis and whooping-cough. Externally, the herb was applied as a poultice to relieve inflammations, ease rheumatic aches and pains, and to treat cancerous growths. Culpeper said that made into an ointment the herb "is good to apply to the bites of venomous creatures." It was also used to heal wounds and sores.
Culinary Usage
Clover was added to salads and soups. A wine was made from the flowers.
Miscellaneous
Pliny said that when clover leaves trembled and stood upright a storm or tempest was on its way. During medieval times clover was grown as a forage crop, or ploughed back into the ground to enrich the soil. The flowers were valued by bee-keepers, because their nectar made a superior honey. The herb's Latin name Trifolium refers to the three-lobed leaves. Traditionally, the leaves were a symbol of the Trinity and were worn to bring good luck, and as a protection against evil and witchcraft. The rare four-leaved clover was considered especially lucky (provided it was not given away) and was reputed to bestow on its owner clairvoyant powers. At sunset the leaves close as if in prayer.
