Description
The bitter aerial portions of the blue vervain (or verbena) plant are effective in treating many diroders related to the bodily systems that include the liver, spleen, and nervous system. Vervain is considered a nervine, an emmenagogue, a bitter tonic, and an emetic in larger doses. It is commonly prescribed for ailments such as liver disorders, irregular and painful menses, decreased milk production in nursing mothers, colds, flus, and fever. Biochemical analysis of the herb has revealed the presence of iridoids, two glycosides (verbenalin and verbenine), essential oil, tannin, bitter principle, and mucilage.
Vervain is useful for liver congestion and related disorders such as painful or irregular menses. It is also good for hepatitis, jaundice, cirrhosis, ascites, mastitis. In addition to these more chronic symptoms, it can also be taken as a simple infusion for acute symptoms of colds, flus and fevers. Vervain also helps to increase the flow of mother's milk.
For nervousness caused by liver congestion, anger, shock, etc., combine equal parts vervain, skullcap herb, chamomile, valerian, Oregon grape and ginger. Take one cup warm three times a day, sweetened with raw sugar or honey as desired. With the addition of one part chaste berries (Vitex agnus-castus), this becomes an ideal treatment for PMS.
