Description
The bitter trunk bark of the pygeum africanum tree is used primarily for the prostate and the kidneys. It has anti-inflammatory action and the biochemical composition of the herb includes ferulic acid esters, as well as beta-sitosterol and beta-sitosterone, which serve as hormone precursors. Pygeum is almost exclusively used for an enlarged prostate (noncancerous), prostatitis, urinary tract infections, and impotence. Pygeum also frequently recommended for treating benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
Simmer 1 ounce of the bark in 1 pint of boiling water for 20 minutes. Cool and take 1 cupful three times daily. It is most commonly found in various herbal preparations along with saw palmetto berries.
