The papaya (or pawpaw) fruit, seeds, and leaves are all used medicinally. The fruit is used to promote healthy digeation and a fruit derivative, papain, is used as a meat tenderizer. In terms of the biochemical composition of papaya, it is the proteolytic enzymes, mainly papain and chymopapain, which specifically aid in the digestion of protein. The seeds contain carpasemine and benzylsenevol. The bodily systems that are affected by the papaya are the spleen and the stomach.
Preparation and Dosage: Papain is used in standardised preparations only; 0.1-0.3 g of pulverised latex is given per day.
