Description: This hibiscus is an erect annual that can reach 4 m in height. It has lobed leaves and yellow flowers, each with a bright red, fleshy calyx and epicalyx (the epicalyx is a whorl of bracts that resemble a second row of sepals). The calyx and epicalyx are persistent and are collected in the fruiting stage. These edible and sweet-sour structures are known as "hibiscus flowers".
Origin: Africa (Angola): now cultivated in all tropical regions. The main producers are in North Africa, Mexico, India, Thailand and China.
Parts Used: Dried calyces and epicalyces (hibiscus flowers - Hibisci flos).
Therapeutic Category: Health tea.
Uses and Properties: Hibiscus flower is mainly used in herbal tea - on its own as a sweet-sour, caffeine-free health drink, or more commonly in tea mixtures as a tasty and colourful additive. The health properties are therefore not the primary reason for the popularity of the tea, although it is traditionally used to treat appetite loss, colds, catarrh of the respiratory tract, circulatory ailments and as gentle expectorant, laxative and diuretic. Hibiscus flower is included in ointments (and decoctions intended for topical application) to treat allergic eczema and various other skin conditions.
Active Ingredients: In watery extracts, up to 15% mucilage polysaccharides and 2% pectins are present. Typical are organic acids (15-30%), such as the unique hibiscus acid, together with ascorbic, citric, malic, and tartaric acids. The polysaccharides are mainly of the arabinan and arabinogalactan type, and occur with galacturonic acid, rhamnose, galactose and arabinose. The deep red colour is due to 1.5% anthocyanins, including the 3-sambubiosides of delphinidin and and cyanidin.
Pharmacological Effects: Sugars and acids contribute to the refreshing taste. The polysaccharides might have mild immune-modulating activity; they form a protective film on inflamed mucosal tissues. Anthocyanins provide colour and some antioxidant effects. The laxative effect can be explained by the presence of organic acids that cannot be resorbed in the intestines and therefore lead to water retention.
