Description
Artichoke leaf is used for liver and gallbladder problems, lowering cholesterol, obesity, rheumatic conditions, and additionally it is used in small doses before meals to address digestive weakness. Artichoke contains an acid substance called cinarin, along with inulin, enzymes, tannin, and sugars. Pharmacological actions include hepatic, biliary fluidifying, cholagogic, diuretic, antirheumatic, digestive, anticholesterol, and fat reducing. Artichoke originates from the Mediterranean area, where it is found wild on the island of Crete. It has a long traditional usage as a general detoxifier especially for diseases of the liver.
Dried artichoke powder contains potent antioxidants that may have a role in preventing cancer, heart disease, and aging. Modern laboratory studies suggest that artichokes contain compounds that can protect the liver from external toxins such as carbon tetrachloride. There is even some evidence that traditional herbalists were right that artichokes promote the flow of bile. Claims that artichokes can lower cholesterol have yet to be proven. There are no reports of serious toxicity, although patients with bleeding disorders should be concerned about possible adverse effects on clotting.

According to a study done in 2004, it does. The study centered around the use of artichoke leaf extract administered to 208 adults identified as having IBS, and results showed a 26.4% fall in IBS incidence following a 2-month treatment. Whether or not a control group was used to rule out any placebo effect, I can't say for sure. Results were positive, nonetheless. An earlier study from 2001 offers additional support as 96% of patients reported that artichoke leaf was equal to or better than conventional IBS therapies in terms of relieving symptoms.
Directions
Take 1 capsule, 3 times daily, with meals.
Cautions
At the recommended amount and according to the German Commission E Monographs, there are no known side effects or drug interactions.
However, they also state that the use of artichoke is contraindicated in those who are allergic to artichokes and other members of the Compositae (e.g., daisy) family.
In addition, those who have any obstruction of the bile duct (e.g., as a result of gallstones) should not employ this plant therapeutically. There have been reports of kidney failure and/or toxicity from the use of artichoke leaves.
The plant's safety during pregnancy and lactation has not been established.
At the time of writing, there were no well-known drug interactions with artichoke.
