Cactus Optunia is an old Mexican remedy. Cactus Optunia, also known as Prickly Pear, is a great source of vitamin C and provides 17 essential amino acids. As a fibrous plant, Cactus Optunia contains pectin, mucilage and gums that are helpful to the digestive system. The body systems most affected are the glandular, nervous, circulatory, respiratory and intestinal tract. Studies show Cactus Optunia actually improves the functioning of the immune system and is a natural source for ascorbic acid and bioflavonoids.
Interestingly, the prickly pear cactus (Optunia) has bristles that are barbed like bee stings and they are used to make the world's itchiest itching powder.

Some animal studies have demonstrated how Nopal (prickly pear) lowered blood cholesterol levels and slowed down weight gain in rats. Whether these results can translate into weight loss benefits for humans is not entirey clear. Studies have also shown how Nopal has hypoglycemic properties making it useful in the treatment of diabetes. Research tells us that there is a strong correlation between diabetes and obesity. Controlling choletserol and blood sugar levels may be the mechanisms by which Nopal encourages weight loss, although further long-term trials are necessary to confidently establish efficacy.
