Description
Butcher's Broom Ruscus aculeatus (Box Holly)
Medicinal Usage
Dioscorides, and other ancient physicians, prescribed the roots and stems of broom for kidney stones. Both roots and young shoots were traditionally used to treat haemorrhoids, gout and jaundice. It reduced inflammation, increased perspiration and acted as a mild laxative.
Culinary Usage
The young shoots of broom were eaten like asparagus, to which the plant is related.
Miscellaneous
The shrub, listed by Aelfric, was traditionally used by butchers to clean chopping blocks and to decorate meat on festive occasions, like Christmas, when broom bears red berries.
Dosage: A decoction of the twigs or root is taken as a warm infusion. A decoction of the root with honey added to taste is effective for clearing the lungs of phlegm and improving breathing.
