Description
The Migraine Reliever
This flowering herb looks just like a large daisy But looks can be deceptiva Fever few contains a unique combination of active plant chemicals making it the herb of choice for migraine and arthritis sufferers. Interestingly, it re-emerged as a popular remedy only in the 1970s.
However, as its name suggests this was not the original use of the plant. Feverfew found its place in the herbal medicine chest of old due to its ability to "dispel fevers," a use that has now gone out of fashion in favor of more effective anti-fever remedies.
Health Benefits
Stop Migraine Before It Starts: The key to feverfew's success in migraine prevention lies in the substance known as parthenolide. This chemical has the unique ability to interfere with the "stickiness" of blood platelets (small cell fragments involved in the clotting function of blood), making them less likely to clump together. Feverfew also exerts a "tonic" effect on the smooth muscle that forms the walls of blood vessels. Additional actions include an anti-inflammatory mechanism. This has been linked to its ability to reduce the levels of circulating chemical irritants. All these substances are the focus of intensive research by major drug manufacturers since they appear to hold the key to pain relief.
Eases Inflamed Joints: In a similar way to feverfew's actions on migraine, inflamed joints also benefit from a dose of this herb. The same irritant substance responsible for the pain of migraine is also implicated in the swelling and pain associated with rheumatoid and other arthritic conditions. The use of strong anti-inflammatory drugs is often associated with significant side effects making them poorly tolerated over long periods of time. Feverfew may be an effective alternative.
How to Take Feverfew
The effectiveness of feverfew depends on the concentration of the active principle parthenolide. An effective daily dose should be in the region of 0.25 to 0.5 mg of parthenolide. High quality feverfew products should display this standardization. A low daily dose may help to prevent migraine attacks but larger doses are needed during an attack. Experience will guide your own personal use but do not exceed 2 g in 24 hours.
