Description: Goldenrod is an erect herb (up to 1 m), bearing oblong leaves and numerous flower heads in oblong clusters at the branch ends. The bright yellow flower heads are relatively large, with the ray florets about 6-10 mm long. Other species used for similar indications are the early goldenrod, S. gigantea var. serotina (hairless stems and ray florets) and Canadian goldenrod, S. canadensis (hairy stems and very small ray florets).
Origin: Temperate parts of Europe, Asia, North Africa and North America (S. virgaurea); North America but widely naturalised in Europe (S. gigantea and S. canadensis). Commercial product (of all three species, often in mixtures) is harvested in the wild, mainly in eastern Europe. S. virgaurea is cultivated on a small scale.
Parts Used: Dried aboveground parts, collected during flowering (Solidaginis virgaureae herba). The name Herba Solidaginis is used when the exact source is not specified, or Herba Serotinae for early goldenrod.
Therapeutic Category: Diuretic.
Uses and Properties: Goldenrod is mainly used as diuretic and urinary antiseptic to treat kidney and bladder infections, as well as urinary calculi and kidney gravel. It is included in cough medicines and antirheumatic preparations. The herb is used externally as a mouth and throat rinse against mucosal inflammation and applied to the skin to treat sores and slow healing wounds.
Preparation and Dosage: Tea is made from 2 - 3 g of the herb, steeped or briefly boiled in a cup of water. As diuretic, it is taken three to five times a day - the recommended daily dose is 6 - 12 g.
Active Ingredients: Goldenrod contains complex mixtures of flavonoids (including glycosides of quercetin, isoquercetin and kaempferol), mono- and bidesmosidic triterpene saponins (e.g. polygalic acid derivatives - virgaureasaponins 1-3), phenolic glycosides (e.g. the bisdesmosides leiocarposide and virgaureoside A), a volatile oil (0.5%) with monoterpenes, organic acids and polysaccharides.
Pharmacological Effects: The herb has diuretic activity (usually ascribed to leiocarposide), as well as antiphlogistic, analgesic, antifungal and mild antispasmodic effects. These activities can be attributed to the saponins and phenolics, present in the drug.

Stir 1/4 of a teaspoon into a glass of water and consume 3 times daily, with meals.
Cautions
Do not take Goldenrod if you have chronic kidney disease. Do not use it to flush the urinary tract if you have swelling caused by heart or kidney problems.
Goldenrod is unlikely to cause problems when taken at usual dosage levels, but be sure to drink lots of fluids while using it.
