Description
The sweet and spicy berries of the juniper are diuretic, carminative, antiseptic, and stimulant. Juniper berries contain a volatile oil, various sugars, resin, and vitamin C. They have been historically recommended for urinary problems, gout, rheumatic complaints, and flatulence. The systems of the body that are affected by juniper berries are the kidneys and the stomach.
Juniper berries are pnmarily used for the treatment of urinary problems, including urine retention, stones and gravel, lumbar pains, uric acid buildup and gout and rheumatic problems. Four to six drops of the oil taken with honey three or four times a day has been a successful home remedy for these ailments. It is anti-inflammatory for arthritic and rheumatic ailments as well as being a useful carminative for indigestion and flatulence. It was traditionally the primary flavoring in gin.
Dosage: Steep one teaspoon in a cup of boiling water for twenty minutes, covered, take one cup three times daily; of the tincture, take 10-30 drops three times daily.
