Mullein - Two useful varieties of Mullein are far apart in size; Great Mullein (Verbascum thapsus), also called Our Lady's Flannel, Hag's Taper, and some 30 other local names, grows to a height of 8 or 9 feet when brought into the garden while the delicate stalk of Moth Mullein (V. blattaria) grows not over 4 feet high.
Propagation: By seed, germination 10 days, self-sows freely.
Nature of Plant: Great Mullein-sturdy, erect stalk from 7 to 8 feet high with huge velvety leaves from 16 to 18 inches long in a big rosette at the foot but much smaller leaves on stalk; flower spikes thick with small, golden yellow flowers; when dried and dipped in oil, stalks burn like tapers; it is too coarse and large for a small flower garden but of interest in a large gray garden.
Moth Mullein - leaves about 2 inches long, flowers 3/4 inch across, yellow with lilac-colored centers, on short stems or pedicels appear to be clinging to the 18-inch stalk; decorative for gardens and good for height in flower arrangements.
Cultural Requirements: Poor, dry soil anywhere; unless seed head of Great Mullein is cut, ground will be matted the following spring with seedlings.
Spacing of Mature Plants: Great Mullein 3 feet; Moth Mullein 10 inches.

The essence of the current American rule on Traditional Uses is, as stated by FTC, "Claims based on historical or traditional use should be substantiated by confirming scientific evidence, or should be presented in such a way that consumers understand that the sole basis for the claim is a history of use of the product for a particular purpose."
