Description
Boneset Eupatorium perfoliatum L.
Family: Asteraceae.
Other Names: Indian sage; herbe à la fièvre (French); Durchwachsener Wasserdost (German); eupatorio (Italian).
Description: Boneset is an erect perennial herb of more than 1 m in height, with lance-shaped leaves and numerous small purple or white flower heads borne in branched clusters. It should not be confused with gravel root or Joe-Pye-herb / weed (Eupatorium purpureum) that has oblong leaves and dark pink flower heads.
Origin: North America (eastern USA); material is mainly wild-harvested.
Parts Used: Aerial parts (Eupatorii perfoliati herba).
Uses and Properties: The herb was traditionally used as a tonic to treat fever (probably influenza) and rheumatism; it is still mainly employed in case of cold and flu, acute bronchitis and congestion of the nose and throat.
Active Ingredients: Boneset is rich in sesquiterpene lactones, including germacranolides (euperfolin), guianolides (eufoliatin) and others. Also present are diterpenes (dendroidinic acid), triterpenes, phytostero]s (sitosterol, stigmasterol), polysaccharides, flavonoids, tannins and essential oil.
Pharmacological Effects: Animal studies have shown that both the sesquiterpene lactones and polysaccharides have immune stimulant activity, supporting the traditional use of the herb in treating flu.
Notes:Eupatorium purpureum (gravel root), aIso from the eastern parts of the USA, is a traditional diuretic that has been used to treat various ailments of the urinary tract, including cystitis, prostatitis, urethritis, kidney stones and urinary stones (gravel). Eupatorium cannabinum, known as hemp agrimony, has leaflets resembling those of cannabis. Leaves of the species show choleretic, liver-protecting, diuretic, wound-healing and immune stimulant activities, as well as cytotoxic effects on tumour cells.
Status: Traditional medicine.
Preparation and Dosage: A tea is made from 1 - 2 g of dry herb in a cup of boiling water and is taken three times a day. Liquid extracts (1 - 2 mL of a 1:1 extract in 25% alcohol) or tinctures (1 - 4 mL of a 1:5 extract in 45% alcohol) are taken three times a day.

Cautions
Patients with liver disease should avoid boneset.
Do not use Boneset consistently for six months or longer.
Boneset is not recommended in pregnancy or lactation.
Boneset should not be used when a high fever (over 102 degrees F) is present.
The varieties E. purpureum and E. cannnabinum contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs), that have liver toxic and carcinogenic properties. PAs alkylate DNA and are therefore mutagenic. Internal use of these varieties is thus not recommended.
