Description
The mystique surrounding the growing of asparagus is such as to prevent many people enjoying both a delicious vegetable and an ornamental foliage plant.
Certainly long rows in the great walled garden of a country house are a joy to behold - as is the professional gardener who maintains them. But lacking that space, and assistance, a yard wide clump in the herb garden can provide surprising amounts of magnificent spears for the table. With regular feeding it is possible to cut enough for two twice a week from April to mid June. Beyond that, every spear taken reduces the vigour of the crowns and their power to build up for winter and next season.
Fortunately there is pleasure, too, in the development of asparagus growth from the tight, fleshy spear to the cloud of feathery "fern". It makes a charming backdrop to heavier things planted at its foot.
Light, rich soil, full sun and perfect drainage seem essential. A dozen young crowns, seven planted on the circumference of a circle and a quincunx in the middle will soon build up a subterranean tangle of fleshy roots which must not on any account be meddled with: deep hoeing is anathema.
Asparagus contains a volatile oil, "glycoside" and other active principles. As a powerful diuretic it was recommended against dropsy: the Shakers were still using it thus over a century after Withering's discovery of the value of Digitalis.
