Description
This pleasant-tasting plant, native to Egypt, is now cultivated in many parts of the world. It's related to carrots and parsley, but tastes so much like licorice that it's used to flavor licorice candy and liqueur. The medicinal part of anise is the dried fruit, commonly referred to as seeds.
Potential Health Benefits
Commission E endorsed preparations made from anise seeds to treat upset stomach and clear the lungs of phlegm. The commission found that anise also has antibiotic qualities. Anise is used to treat bronchitis, fever, and sore throat.
Scientific Evidence
The essential oil made from anise seeds includes the chemical anethole and chemicals creosol and aipha-pinene, which make anise effective as an expectorant. American health writer Steven B. Karch, M.D., writes: "Clinical studies of anise are very few in number, but results of laboratory studies suggest that anise is an anti-inflammatory agent and a very good anti-oxidant. Extracts of anise inhibit the growth of certain tumors, particularly colon cancer." More study of this potentially important use is undoubtedly needed.
How to Use the Herb
Commission E recommends an average daily dose of 3 grams of the drug or 0.3 grams of the essential oil, both taken orally. Anise tea can be made by crushing 1 teaspoonful of anise seeds and steeping 10-20 minutes in hot water; take the tea 3 times per day. American health writer Michael Castleman additionally recommends 1/2 to 1 teaspoonful of tincture, taken up to 3 times per day as a treatment for cough, bronchitis and asthma, and as a digestive aid.
Dosage
3 to 9 grams or one teaspoon of the crushed seeds steeped in a cup of boiling water, covered. Take two or three times daily or as needed.
