Originally discovered in South America and highly regarded in South American traditional medicine, today the use of devil's claw is widespread throughout Europe and North America. Devil's Claw is widely prescribed for rheumatic and arthritic pain, and the active compounds called harpagosides and harpagides are believed to be responsible for its analgesic and anti-inflammatory benefits. There is strong clinical evidence to support the use of devil's claw for chronic non-specific low back pain (NSLBP) according to research. Preparations of the herb that contain 50 - 60 mg of harpagoside seem to yield the best results.
Glucosamine (in combination with chondroitin) is known to be effective in the treatment of moderate to severe knee pain caused by osteoarthritis. It has also compared very favorably to many of the leading painkillers (acetaminophen, for example) without the side effects. While the combination of glucosamine and devil's claw has yet to be the subject of a large-scale and long-term clinical trial, it is undoubtedly a smart supplement choice in the adjunct treatment of joint pain.
