Studies have revealed that the combination of glucosamine sulfate and chondroitin is superior in alleviating moderate to severe knee pain as compared with the placebo or each supplement used alone. Glucosamine and chondroitin, taken together, offered more relief than Celebrex in 12 out of 14 outcome measures in a high profile 2005 study (Glucosamine-chondroitin Arthritis Intervention Trial or the "GAIT" study) involving 1,500 osteoarthritis patients. In a multi-centered clinical trial out of Europe, glucosamine sulfate alone was more effective than acetaminophen over a 24-week period, and researchers concluded that glucosamine sulfate might be the symptomatic medication of choice in cases of osteoarthritis of the knee.
