Omega-3 fatty acids have shown great benefits for those suffering from depression and bipolar disorders in studies out of Finland, Israel and China. According to one study on depressed patients, one of the active compounds, EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), is believed to have a greater impact than that of its counterpart, DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). Although both are key components, products with a higher percentage of EPA over DHA, such as Swiss Omega Plus 3-6-9, is preferable.
A balance of both omega 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids would be ideal in today's diet, but most people's diets are heavily weighted towards the omega-6 foods. Cutting down on polyunstaurated vegetable oils and processed foods is a smart way to reduce unhealthy dietary sources of omega-6 fatty acids.
