Description
While there has been little research on humans using lecithin to improve cognitive ability, animal studies focusing on the role of lecithin in cognitive functions have produced positive results. In more than a few studies, lecithin- or choline-fed animals (either pregnant females or their young) had fewer cognitive difficulties later in life as compared with those who did not receive any lecithin or choline. Whether or not lecithin (or choline) can prevent or treat dementia is another issue. Studies on humans have had mixed results when memory, cognitive abilities, or conditions such as Alzheimer's have been examined.
Lecithin supplementation has proven to be a means of moderately lowering LDL (bad) cholesterol while decreasing levels of cholesterol absorption from foods. Choline deficiencies have been linked to liver diseases such as cirrhosis and cancer in laboratory rats fed a choline-free diet. These results were parallelled in human studies as lecithin provided a hepato-protective effect in humans as fatty deposits were decreased and the incidence of liver damage reduced.
