Description
Swiss Micro-Lactin is a patented milk protein concentrate clinically proven to promote overall joint health. Research has shown this product to reduce the degree of joint pain and joint stiffness by optimizing the body's natural anti-inflammatory system. When taken as directed, results should be noticeable within 1-2 weeks of use and improvement will increase with continued daily use. Swiss Micro-Lactin is 90% lactose free.
Made from a concentrated lactose-free protein found in cow's milk, Micro-Lactin is currently the focus of interest in the treatment of joint pain, inflammation, and stiffness associated with osteoarthritis.
In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled Canadian study involving 42 patients (intially 42; 35 finished), Swiss Herbal Micro-Lactin outperformed glucosamine sulfate and the placebo for relieving the symptoms of joint pain. These results were according to the University of Western Ontario and Macmaster assessment and scores (WOMAC).
It should be noted that the amount of Micro-Lactin given daily was greater than that of glucosamine sulfate; patients were given 2000 mg of Micro-Lactin (twice daily), 500 mg of glucosamine sulfate (three times daily) or a placebo. It's unclear why equal dosages weren't compared, as a higher dosage of glucosamine sulfate may have enhanced its effects and improved its score. If an optimal glucosamine sulfate dosage was chosen, based on past research, and the beneficial effects were known to plateau at this dosage, then this may have not been a flaw in the study at all.
However, past research does suggest that glucosamine, in combination with chondroitin, is superior to glucosamine alone, and it would have been interesting to see how the combination would have stacked up against Micro-Lactin. Finally, the study spanned 6 weeks; a long-term study may be necessary to get a clearer picture of the efficacy of these two supplements head to head. It may be that glucosamine sulfate hits its stride after 8-10 weeks. In the final analysis, both supplements have outperformed the placebo, significantly, in the bulk of the published research and both are worthy of consideration in the treatment of osteoarthritis.
