Description
In addition to activating the antioxidant enzyme, glutathione peroxidase, selenium is a required mineral (in small amounts - micrograms not milligrams) that inhibits cell damage by producing these antioxidant proteins. While vitamins C and E and beta carotene are other popular antioxidant supplements, selenium and vitamin E, together, seem to enhance the effects of one another. For this reason, they are often combined in antioxidant formulas. Meats, nuts, and seafood provide adequate levels of dietary selenium. Dried, unblanched brazilnuts provide the single highest source of the mineral while mixed nuts and fish such as orange roughy are a distant second and third place. Decreased cognitive function has been associated with low levels of selenium in the elderly, and the mineral may stave off diseases such as prostate cancer. Because of the effects of selenium on antioxidant enzyme systems of the body, this mineral has been the focus of a significant amount of animal and laboratory reasearch as well as clinical trials examining its effects on cancer, thyroid conditions, cardiovascular disease, neurological disorders, and many more conditions resulting from free radical damage.
