The role of lysine in the treatment of herpes has been studied for several years, although definitive conclusions as to its efficacy remain unclear. Some recent studies have shown how lysine can diminish the severity and healing time of HSV breakouts. Older studies have been less promising, but the criticism is that lower dosages were used, and therefore ineffective. The relationship between lysine's fellow amino acid, arginine, seems to be optimal for herpes when levels of lysine are high and those of arginine are low. There is some evidence to support the use of lysine for the treatment of cold sores and fever blisters. Foods that offer significant levels of lysine include meat, poultry, eggs, corn, brewer's yeast, saurkraut, and yogurt.
