Description
Vitamin E has been prescribed for a wide range of health conditions including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and cataracts, as well as immune and reproductive support. The combination of Vitamin E and C makes an effective sunscreen that is natural and chemical-free; vitamin E may also be applied topically to facilitate the healing of scars and burns.
One Canadian study suggests that vitamin E may play a beneficial role in treating epileptic children: a study based out of the University of Toronto revealed that vitamin E reduced the frequency of seizures to a significant degree. Vitamin E has also been recommended for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, tardive dyskinesia, and alzheimer's disease. Growing evidence suggests the effectiveness of this vitamin, in treating these particular conditions, is due to its antioxidant properties.
While antioxidant supplements aren't known for having 'performance-enhancing' properties, vitamin E appears to be the one exception: a 1990 placebo-controlled study out of Germany on mountaineers revealed that vitamin E outperformed the placebo with respect to increasing anaerobic threshold and minimizing free radical damage; this can translate into health benefits for high level athletes or climbers performing at high altitudes.
