Description
Our brain produces melatonin at night when light falls to regulate the sleep-wake cycle (circadian rhythms). When our sleep patterns are disturbed by traveling or for other reasons, some people find that falling and staying asleep very troublesome. Supplemental melatonin helps to regulate circadian rhythms and improve sleep quality related to sleep disorders and jet lag.

One report at melatonin.com suggests that while melatonin is generally considered safe and effective, there is a small percentage of people who still have difficulty sleeping and also experience fatigue in the mornings - in addition to other side effects that include headaches, mild depression, and low sex drive. So, it's not out of the ordinary for someone to continue to have sleep difficulties - or worse.
I would suggest that you try different supplements including valerian, passion flower, hops, or chamomile. These are available individually or in various blends in capsule, powder, or tea form. Calcium and magnesium supplements taken before bed are helpful as well.
Insomnia can be the result of many factors including stress or anxiety, lack of exercise, or alcohol or caffeine consumption to name a few. Adding a relaxing herbal tea and some bedtime reading to your evening ritual may prove to be beneficial.
