Description - Research and Analysis

The Violet family covers 200 species, some of which, particularly in South America, have roots with vomitive properties which can replace ipecacuanha. The seeds of the Sweet Violet are purgative. The flowers, mainly those of this last species, are pectoral.

A gently laxative syrup can be prepared by an infusion of the fresh petals. This syrup can also be used as a reactive. Culpeper tells us it can be useful in hot swellings to drink the decoction of the leaves and flowers made with water or wine, or to apply them as poultices to the affected part.
